Partick Thistle in financial difficulties

Had they not got the game at Ibrox after beating us in the cup they wouldn't have been able to pay wages. Makes their playoff collapse all the worse. And maybe explains why they weren't able to hold onto Tiffoney.

Quote

"Whilst we were right in warning about the erosion of working capital and the threat of that margin of safety being removed, even we were shocked when we learned the true extent of how bad the financial position inherited by the interim board turned out to be."

Sounds horribly familiar.

I was reading an article yesterday that was saying they're not the only club with financial troubles and won't the last trying to keep the wolf from the door this year. Livi are another obvious one and Inverness have also been mentioned.

Inverness CT future in 'significant doubt' after club post £835,000 loss in latest accounts - Daily Record

Assume getting to cup final wouldve helped but not sure how much.

It's almost certainly just coincidence, but it sometimes seems like there's a pattern with this sort of thing:

  • Falkirk reportedly in financial trouble - VERY easy cup run earned them about 400k this year
  • ICT reportedly in trouble - got to the cup final with a run that wasn't exactly the hardest it could have been (Stirling Albion, Queens Park, Livi, Killie, Falkirk)
  • Partick Thistle in trouble - drawn away at Ibrox after beating us, helping them pay their wages that month
  • And even going back as far as 2004 - as we all know, we had major financial issues bubbling just under the surface, and we got to the cup final (via Dundee Utd, Clyde, Thistle and ICT)

I wonder how many other examples there are of clubs receiving fortuitous runs that coincide with them needing quick injections of cash?

Mind you, probably almost every club in Scotland has needed a major cash injection at some point, so it's maybe no surprise.

ICT were doubly lucky in that they were knocked out by Queens Park and only got back in due to them fielding an ineligible player. I was told at the weekend that Billy Dodds was out of contract on 1st June and wasn't going to lead the team out at Hampden until it was sorted. His new deal was only announced yesterday, presumably once they knew exactly what their finances would be.

How can Livi be in trouble? Again? They've been in the top flight for a few seasons now, surely they can't be spending stupid money?

ot sure by how much or that if they are even spending daft money on wages but Martindale has had to let quite a few players go who he would otherwise have kept and had to make cuts to his backroom staff meaning Christophe Berra has been let go, when he said otherwise it would have been a "no brainer" to keep him. He's been quite vocal about it and I think it shows what a great job the guy has done.
